Varies: This process can start from germs invading the bag of waters surrounding baby due to prolonged rupture of the membranes.Any labor lasting more than 18 hrs after ROM has an increased risk of newborn sepsis. If recognized and treated immediately, recovery chances are good but not perfect. Pre-birth infection and any other delays in diagnosis can lead to death or major disabilities if baby survives.
