What are common signs and symptoms of a pleural effusion?

Shortness of breath: As the chest cavity fills with fluid, the lung gets compressed. This can lead to shortness of breath, as well as possible chest pain, depending on the cause of the effusion. Fever is another possible finding, but is also related to the cause of the effusion.
