Protect baby: If a mother has HIV infection and doesn't know it or isn't treated, there is a high risk that she can pass it on to her baby. Babies and children with HIV suffer terribly, and may die very early in life. The good news is that if HIV is detected early during pregnancy, current medications are close to 100% effective in preventing the baby from ever getting infected with hiv.
