Yes: Compression of the nerve to the hand causes atrophy of the hand muscles. This leads to weakness, poor performance by the hand and chronic pain. Chronic pain leads to medication overuse, depression and decrease motivation.

No: Some medical conditions, diabetes, pregnancy, thyroid conditions and rheumatoid arthritis, can cause carpal tunnel syndrome (cts). Cts is not known to cause any medical conditions.
