Melioidosis-bad news: Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by a Gram-negative bacterium, Burkholderia pseudomallei. It's found in soil in certain areas like Vietnam, where many American GIs were exposed. The bacteria can enter the body through a break in the skin, inhalation (dust from a chopper for example), or swallowed - as in contaminated food/water. Protective clothing including shoes! could therefore help.
