Insulin Resistance.: Insulin Resistance, or "pre-diabetes" causes fatty replacement of the liver, so-called "non-alcoholic fatty liver disease", or NAFLD. Also excessive Acetominophen (Tylenol) use can, as well as certain herbal remedies. Every year, several people die from using "herbal teas" due to rapid liver failure. Be very careful when using these herbal remedies and do so in conjunction with your doctor.

Many things.: Acetaminophen, especially when taken regularly and especially when alcohol is used as well. Since the liver processes many medications, it is vulnerable to toxicity if the medications are used chronically or if there is an overdose; the same holds for illicit drugs. Taking many medications raises the risk of liver toxicity. Some poisonous mushrooms and other substances can damage the liver.
