Many types: There are many types of brain tumors, both benign and malignant (cancer). However, even benign brain tumors can cause serious problems, depending on where they are located in the brain. A large mass can damage normal adjacent nerves or brain tissue and block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Sometimes a mass can actually press so hard it can herniate another part of the brain controlling breathing.
