Watch for symptoms: Black widow spiders have a red hourglass shape on their abdomen. What you need to watch for is pain and swelling at the site. Then if it is a black widow you may develop abdominal pain, fever chills and vomiting. If you begin to develop these symptoms go to the Emergency Department immediately. If it is another type of spider you may have a little swelling but you should not become ill.

Black Widow: Black widows are usually about ½” long. The Southern Black Widow has glossy black abdomen with a red “hour glass” design. The Northern black Widow may be brown colored & usually has red (sometimes yellow or white) dots along the middle of its upper abdomen. Go to ER ASAP for generalized cramping of muscles, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, chest pain, difficulty breathing and tremor.
