Derealization: Derealization: an alteration in the perception or experience of the external world so that it seems strange or unreal. From a psychodynamic perspective, derealization is a psychological defense mechanism that can protect one against a variety of negative feelings, conflicts, or experiences. There are medical/neurological causes of this phenomena as well, so--in either case--please see your doctor.
