Depends on cause: Trying to stop a cough is always what we want to do when we are coughing but it depends upon the cause of the cough what we can do to stop it. Coughs can be caused from infections, allergies, medications, dehydration and reflux. In all cases it is good to drink plenty of water. Cough drops and syrups can help but you really need to find and treat the cause to stop a cough.

That depends: On what is causing your cough. I have a number of things normally that I ask about when assessing someone with a cough. I think you might want to see if a doctor here on Prime can talk with you about it, or better yet see a local doctor. For a simple cough that's caused by a cold, I suggest over the counter cough medicine with dextromethorphan in it. It really helps. Feel better!
