Depends on the cause: It depends on the cause of the cough. Most acute coughs are due to viral infections, but coughs can also be caused by allergies, tuberculosis, cancer etc. Presuming you are talking about an acute infection, my favorite treatments are the herb pellargonium sidoides (sold as umcka) & homeopathy. A good article on homeopathy for coughs is http://homeopathyplus.Com.Au/coughs-and-how-to-treat-them/.

Natural: I agree with dr. Baker. Mix hot water, 1 tsp. Lemon juice & 1 tsp. Honey in a mug, then add more lemon juice or honey to taste, if desired. Sip the mixture slowly and inhale the steam from the hot liquid to help reduce congestion in the chest. Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes). Cont'd.

Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. Hydrate well. Consider using a warm air vaporizer. For fever with cough & significant head or cough lasting more than a week consult with medical. (** Don’t give honey to babies under the age of one.**)

Intersting question?: Some cough because they smell a ciggarate, or somke thier 1st one. Advanced cases of smoker’s cough mean people can cough for a long time after waking to clear this phlegm. Smoker’s cough indicates you have damaged cilia, which aside from smoking can create other health hazards.

Why do I start to cough when I eat or drink cold things?

Could be asthma: There are many things that than cause after eating. One could be aspiration- accidentally swallowing liquids down the wrong pipe. If this only happens with cold, there is a phenomenon called bronchospasm, a component of asthma where the tubes in the lungs tighten up in response to cold which can cause a need to cough. This can be tested for and treated by a physician.

A number of issues: Chronic cough can be due to lung disease, acid reflux, allergy/sinusitis with post nasal, or even be habitual. One important point is when the cough bothers you. Asthma is associated with colds and exercise. Night time cough is typical of asthma or reflux. Post nasal drip is frequently worst in the morning. I would recommend a careful evaluation by your primary doctor or a pulmonologist.
