Depends on the cause: It depends on the cause of the cough. Most acute coughs are due to viral infections, but coughs can also be caused by allergies, tuberculosis, cancer etc. Presuming you are talking about an acute infection, my favorite treatments are the herb pellargonium sidoides (sold as umcka) & homeopathy. Natural: I agree with dr. Baker. Mix hot water, 1 tsp. Lemon juice & 1 tsp. Honey in a mug, then add more lemon juice or honey to taste, if desired. Sip the mixture slowly and inhale the steam from the hot liquid to help reduce congestion in the chest. Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes). Cont'd.
