Old blood: Most of the time, brown spotting or bleeding represents older blood that the uterus, cervix or upper vagina had been "holding onto" for various reasons. W/ the cramping I would guess uterus as the source. It very well may be midcycle bleeding due to ovulation or other ovulatory abnormalities. I don't see a birth control method; sometimes that causes unscheduled bleeds. If continues, have an exam done.
