It really depends: It really depends on the health condition of the baby at birth. Many premature infants do quite well and are released without a stay in the NICU. Your physician may give you steroids prior to delivery to accelerate lung maturity. Infants born between 34-36 weeks may need extra care in the hospital which can lengthen their stay
