A member asked:

How is the cervix dilated for placement of a iud?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Small instrument: An iud folds up for insertion, so the cervix does not have to be dilated very wide (only about 3-4mm). In some women who have given birth before, it is sometimes not even necessary to dilate the cervix to get the iud properly placed. If dilation is needed, a small, sterile instrument with a rounded tip is used; sometimes injecting a local anesthetic is sufficient to relax the cervix open enough.
