A member asked:

What is the blood test ca 19-9 for and who should have it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Limited: This is an abnormal protein that is often present in people with a variety of cancers of the gut, particularly pancreatic cancer. It is not a good screening test in the absence of a known mass. If positive, results should drop on removal of the tumor and will probably rise again as an early warning of tumor recurrence.
