A multiplicity of: potential causes. If the pain is so bad it is preventing you from sleeping, and especially if you rarely get headaches, I suggest you have this evaluated right away (meaning in urgent care or an emergency room.) If you have a regular doctor who can see you today I would call and go there right away. This can be a serious problem or it may be something minor, better to err on the side of caution.

Several thoughts: Most headaches aren't due to serious causes. But any of the following features should prompt an urgent visit to the Dr.: unusual severe headaches you haven't had in the past, HA waking you out of sleep, HA's getting increasingly worse, HA brought on by straining at stool, HA associated with loss of vision.
