Six months: for grieving. This is a general rule of thumb. Some situations are harder to deal with than others (loss of a child for instance) If one is depressed beyond 6 months one should consider the possibility of other issues like premorbid sub-clinical depression. Of course at any time after a trauma it makes perfect sense to receive help.
