Correct - not Ebola: This description is not consistent with Ebola. But - do recommend medical evaluation to rule out other types of infection.

What can you do if the villagers have ebola, and what can you do to keep others from getting it?

Supportive care: Ebola has no cure or meaningful treatment other than to provide support to failing systems until the person recovers. The patient must be place in a level 4 isolation to prevent spread. In a rural village in an area with no real medical care calling in medicine sans frontiers might help, but most likely the village or at least all who are sick are doomed.

What do you think the likeliness of the Ebola coming to the US is?

Hmm....: We've already had it in the US. There was importation of infected research monkeys in the 1980s, I think. Fortunately no humans got sick. It is always possible, but I don't think very likely. Remember that some of the trouble they are having in western Africa, is that they don't have access to a lot of infection control procedures and equipment that we have in the States.

A 26-year-old female asked:

Do you think ebola might have already mutated into airborne given how bad the epidemic is? If not, how likely will it become airborne soon?

Already airborne: From the first descriptions of Ebola infection (pulmonary hemorrhagic fever), doctors suspected that transmission was via inhalation of airborne droplets. Ebola, then, has ALWAYS been "airborne" - it's the main way that Ebola spreads. What's different this time, I believe, is that the outbreak was not contained (patients were not quarantined well). Ebola, like all viruses, is constantly mutating.

Provided original answer
I meant "droplet" (aerosolized). Ebola has always been "aerosolized". The virus particles are found in high concentrations in the body fluids of bats, including saliva, droppings, blood, etc. While bats are a reservoir for transmission, human-to-human transmission also occurs, usually by exposure to body fluids (ie, droplets). Currently, there is no proof of a new strain of Ebola, to my knowledge.
