Neutropenia: I believe your son is currently 3? What is happening now is unrelated to the birth episode. Keep close followup. There are many questions here. Does your son have a normal exam? ( no hepatomegaly or petechia like rash) what are the other cell line values? (red blood cells and platelets) Get these answers from your doc. If unsure or these are not normal, need hematologist eval ASAP.

Neutropenia: This may still resolve. The question is what is the cause and is it making him more prone to infection. Review the results with your doctor and ask to see a Pediatric Hematologist. All the best and I hope he recovers soon.
