Both are equal: Birth control is necessary to best prevent unwanted pregnancy in your partner. The best birth control methods do not protect against infection. To prevent infection you need a condom but you need to keep in mind, condoms can have up to a 30% or more failure rate depending on the application of and integrity maintenance of the condom.

Condom, both is best: Birth control pills are very helpful in not getting pregnant, but even if you use them properly you still need to use a condom to prevent sexually transmitted infections. Using both is optimal. See checklists in healthtap on having safe sex.
