Abscess? Herpes?: Usually this is a bacterial infection (eg staph or strep) starting in a hangnail. But could be herpetic whitlow, finger infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV1 or HSV2), usually at same time as new oral or genital herpes, but sometimes by itself. See a doctor right away. Bacterial infection may need pus drained and/or an antibiotic, and herpes needs prompt diagnosis and antiviral treatment.

Chronic paronychia: DO NOT GO TO URGENT CARE. They are not likely to have any experience or knowledge of this. It is chronic, not urgent. Mostly women, especially those who do wet work. Food or hair handling, use of plastic (rubber) gloves. Bandaids and antibiotics make it much worse. Involves yeast (candida), pseudomonas. See a dermatologist.
