Insufficient intake: A high % (as much as 70%) of Americans suffer from vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. The reason? Not enough sunlight exposure and dietary intake. Most people will need to take a supplement. If you have no GI symptoms, it is unlikely that malabsorption is the issue. Vit D3 supplement is the usual answer- most need 2000 u daily to get the optimal level (not just the lower limit of normal).

Vit D supplements: Are you having GI or bone sx? Renal problem? Have you had supplements and remain low? Studies have shown that over 70% of those living in the northern states have low Vit D due to lack of sun exposure in colder months and low milk intake. I have found that true in my practice in Upstate NY.

Need blood test: To diagnose Vit D deficiency, you need blood test. History suggestive of malabsorption is not sufficient.
