Pain or instability: Knees can "go out" for a myriad of reasons. In general, two types of giving out can occur: due to pain and aberrant muscle firing causing "buckling", or ligamentous injury causing mechanical giving way due to the lack of ligamentous constraint. A thorough history and examination by your orthopaedic surgeon will uncover the answer and allow for appropriate treatment.
