Depends, many things: Depends on age, family history, and other medical problems. Most benign causes are costochondritis which is viral inflammation of the rib cartilage that goes away on its own. Also precordial catch syndrome is common in young age. More serious causes include pericarditis, fluid around the lung, among others. You should have a complete exam with your doctor.
