Radiation Risks: The risk to your health from the radiation exposure from a CT scan is very small, but cumulative over your lifetime. In other words, the more x-rays and CT scans you have, the greater the risk. If it is clinically essential that the diagnostic study be done, then the benefit of the test outweighs the risk. You and your doctor should ask the question for your problem if the test is essential.

It is good to make sure that the study is really needed. So don't be afraid to ask your doctor for detail on the risk benefit ratio.
