Esophageal Varices: Staging is 1-4(4 is worst). Presence of varices indicates liver disease in most instances. Larger varices (stage 4) may be rubber banded, medication injected or in some instances surgical or radiology procedure for elimination. Many GI specialists place stage 1-2 on medication to aid in decrease in size and reduce risk of spontaneuous bleeding. Patient should be under care of GI specialist.
