Umcka, homeopathy: Almost all dry coughs are caused by viruses so antibiotics won't help. Pelargonium sidoides, sold as Umcka, is a herb from South Africa well-proven to be effective for viral bronchitis. Homeopathy is also often effective if you find the remedy that matches best. Cough: Studies show that one teaspoon of dark honey once a day or five ml of Vicks rubbed on his skin once a day can help. Also keep a cool mist humidifier near the child and nasal saline drops to his nose three times a day.

Evaluation : The cause of the cough should be determined. Cough has many causes and there is a form of asthma which presents with dry cough. Post nasal drip may cause a cough and worsens when a child lies down typically. An assessment may be completed with your pediatrician and a virtual visit scheduled with Healthtap. Cough syrup is generally not advised in this age group, nor an advantage over nasal saline
