Low likelihood: Someone in a long-term, monogamous relationship with a partner infected with HCV is at low risk, the risk of sexual transmission ranges from 0 to 0.6 percent per year. This risk of transmission is slightly higher — about 1 percent per year — if involved in a short-term sexual relationship with someone who has Hepatitis C. The risk increases if the person is HIV positive

Possibly: The cdc estimates that about 20% of new cases of hepatitis c are from sex. However, the risk for any one person is low. Men who have anal sex with other men are at higher risk. People who are young, have multiple partners, or have sores like herpes or syphilis are also at risk. Heterosexual couples who have been together a while are at low risk.

Yes, but: It has to be protected sex. The male partner needs to use a condom. No exchange of fluids.

A 20-year-old female asked:

Can you get hep c through unprotected sex?

Very unlikely: Hepatits C has been oversold as an STD. In fact, the only proved sexual transmission is between gay men with potentially traumatic anal sex practices. The frequency of hep C in the heterosexual partners of infected persons is exactly the same as in anyone else. To be maximally safe, use condoms if you have sex with a partner known to have hep C. Otherwise no worries about sexual transmission.
