Infection or bite?: A mosquito bite is usually somewhat itchy, and then I suggest cool compresses and an oral antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Zyrtec, etc. to cut down on the itch. If painful or burning sensation, it is more likely a bacterial infection or herpes cold sore, in which case an evaluation by your family doctor is recommended and a Rx may be necessary.
