A member asked:

How common is hypouricemia in people with iron deficiencies?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Why do you ask?: You know that hypouricemia, low uric acid in the blood, is not itself a health problem. Vegetarianism is a very important cause of iron deficiency if one does not supplement, and vegetarians run lower uric acid levels than meat-eaters. Iron deficiency does need to be worked up as it can be a warning about bleeding ulcer, cancer, hookworm, or other serious illness.
