See details: This is a characteristic of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. This occurs after there is irritation in the skin in the area in response to the inflammation and becomes pigmented.

Post inflammatory: Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a common and normal response during the healing process. When traumatized skin heals, redness, followed by dark discoloration often occurs. With time, the site will usually resume normal coloration to match the surrounding skin. Topical steroid creams applied initially can help reduce inflammation and prevent excessive discoloration.
