Easy to explain: Hi. I'm sorry your doc copped the plea "it's too difficult". It's not. Hyperthyroidism exists when the thyroid is driven to autonomously overproduce thyroid hormones or to leak out stored thyroid hormones (depending on underlying cause). This bypasses the normally exquisite regulation of thyroid function by the pituitary gland. It will be one of: Graves' disease, subacute thyroiditis, or nodule(s)

Depends on test: There are several different tests that can be described as "thyroid" tests. Some, if elevated, would be consistent with hyperthyroidism and others, if elevated, will be consistent with hypothyroidism. If your doctor can make it clear to you if you have either hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism, then the internet can teach you what thyroid hormone does and the problems it can cause.
