Pretty much random: While you may read that timing of intercourse and the use of particular douches may help determine the sex of the baby, these interventions have a very modest, if any influence. Short of in vitro methods where either a particular sperm can be selected or the sex determined at a very early stage, there is no reliable method to determine the sex of your baby ahead of time.

Pure chance: A woman's sex chromosome is 'xx'. Therefore a woman can only contribute an 'x' chromosome. The male sperm carries an 'x' or 'y' chromosome. If an 'x' from the male combines with one of the female's you'll get an 'xx' baby which is a female. If the 'y' combines with one of the female's, you'll get an 'xy' baby, which is a male. Therefore, the determining factor is the male sperm.
