Why do most cirrhosis patients have low platelets?

Hypersplenism: With portal hypertension in liver disease the spleen enlarges. It can destroy platelets as it increases in size. Likewise continued alcohol consumption can suppress the production of new platelets in the bone marrow. If the cause of liver injury is removed in time some recovery can take place.
