A member asked:

Is it true that if a platelet count gets to be too low then ng feeding is unsafe? if so, what (approximately) would be an unsafe plt level?

The problem: is that the insertion of NG tube can be traumatic at times an cause bleeding with low platelets. but usually safe as low as platelet count of 40 K. but if the tube is already in low platelet count is not of any consequence

Risk of bleeding: Platelets keep us safe from bleeding especially from cuts and bruises which are common in our life but go unnoticed when the platelet counts are normal(>150,000). .When platelets drop to< 50,000, then cuts tend to bleed more than normal, but there is no spontaneous bleeding, which will occur once the counts go < 20,000. The risk is greatest when platelets are <10,000. NG feeding is OK is no bleed
