A member asked:

My father is diagnosed with prostate cancer, and doctor is saying for removal of testicles, is this necessary?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Questionable`: Orchiectomy is a way to cut down on testosterone and other male hormones. Another way to reduce testosterone levels is by taking medicines such as Lupron (leuprolide) or if necessary chemotherapy. Lupron (leuprolide) acts as an agonist at pituitary GnRH receptors. It indirectly downregulates secretion of gonadotropins leading to hypogonadism and thus a dramatic reduction in testosterone levels. Some prefer surgery over taking medications An orchiectomy however is permanent and represents only a first line in control of prostate cancer. .
