My wife (age 50) had severe pain at bottom of spine. it subsided with pain killers, then it started in right thigh. what does this sound like?

Pinched nerve: There are a number of possibilities and I would encourage her to be seen. One possibility is that she has a herniated disc. These patients can initially have severe back pain and then as the disc herniated out more it can push on a nerve leading to leg pain. A detailed exam can usually determine the cause.
