A member asked:

Am i likely to need a colostomy? if so, might it be permanent?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends on disease: In order to give you an adequate response, i need to know what your diagnosis is. I am going to assume it is a colorectal malignancy. A colostomy is performed when it is necessary to bypass or remove the distal colon, rectum, or anus, and it is not advisable or not possible to maintain integrity of the bowel. The ostomy is permanent if the distal rectum or anorectal sphincter is removed.
