Pterygium?: There are many potential etiologies. However, a pterygium fits your description and is fairly common. You can try artificial tears to see if it helps with your vision. Surgical excision is the only way to remove the pterygium. Shingles in the eye can cause scarring on the surface of the eye, but would typically be hard to see in the mirror. You should see an eye MD for evaluation and treatment.
