A member asked:

I have been diagnosed with mild hyperinflation of the lungs, what does this mean? is it serious?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hyperinflation: Hyperinflation of the lungs, or retention of air in the lungs, is not a diagnosis. It is a physical finding. People who have asthma, emphysema, COPD and a few other lung disorders retain air in the lungs. If you smoke, stop now. Have you had a chest X-ray? Have you had spirometry or pulmonary function testing yet? These tests may help decide how serious your lung disease is at this time.
