Arthritis: When you say 'middle" I assume you mean the joint where the thumb bends. You could have arthritis in the IP joint, or inflammation of the tendon sheaths. A visit to your primary care could determine the need for referral to a hand surgeon. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Hi, Years ago my thumb got twisted and since then there is gap in my mcp joint, I can see it clearly when I close my thumb. There is no problem in movements but it hurts a little when I try to push it to limits. Can such old injuries be healed ?
