Changes in surface: Any thing that changes the normal mucosal surface should be suspect. Leukoplakia is the most common. Leukpoplakia is a whitish thickening to the mucosa that may do be related to trauma.

Leukoplakia: Doctors can identify white patches in the mouth, called leukoplakia, that are premalignant. There are other types of premalignant lesions of the mouth as well. These are induced by tobacco use. There is currently no medical treatment to prevent them from progressing to cancer, though there is a lot of research. Quitting using tobacco may help. Rate of progression is 5-18%. Good luck.
