Try rice diet: First try rest, ice, compression ( ace wrap), and elevation. If that doesn't help, see your local podiatrist.

Ankle malalignment: You are pronating too much when you are on your feet. Causing compression of the outside of your ankle joint which can lead to swelling and pain. There may be a bone spur in that part of the joint from previous ankle sprains. See specialist for x-rays and realignment with orthotics, and or surgery.

A 41-year-old member asked:
The outside top part of my ankle hurts and is quite swollen. Is that the malleolus which is extremely swollen?

Tissue: It is probably the tissue around the bone(malleolus).

Support: Its important to have a physician look at your ankle esp if you're a runner because it can be anything from a sprain, pinched nerve, inflammation, etc. Make sure your running stride is less traumatic. Make sure you have good running shoes.
Often its a combination of factors for ankle pain esp if you're a runner. Also important to stretch after each run and hydrate.

My ankle hurts from my soccer game. Ice didn't help. What now?

Possibly see doc: If you are having ankle pain that is not helping with at home conservative measures (ie the rice protocol, rest, ice, compression, elevation) then it is not a bad idea to check in with a foot and ankle specialist to ensure that there might not have been any other injury that might have occurred during the game.

My ankle hurts, how do I know its not broken?

Superman: Or an x-ray, whichever one is easier to get to. The old wife's tale that if you can move it, it ain't broke is not true. The only way to tell if a bone is broken is with an x-ray.

Many possibilities: Pain in that area could be due to trauma (fracture, tendon or ligamentous tear, arthritis), infection, inflammation, metabolic conditions (gout) musculoskeletal (bony over growth) or biomechanical abnormality, or neurologic conditions (neuropathy). A thorough history and physical exam and possibly laboratory and radiology exams could determine the cause. Have it evaluated by a professional.
