Definitions: In medicine, we often use the term 'global' to mean widespread, or the whole. Atrophy is a term which generally means 'shrinking' or 'wasting away'. For example, if your son had a scan of the brain and the results were 'Global Atrophy', one could interpret this to mean that the majority of the brain was smaller than usual.

Depends on cause: Hi Lawrence242 global brain atrophy means that the overall size of the brain is smaller than normal. The significance depends on its severity, whether it is progressive and its cause. accordingly the effects on learning and functioning can range from very mild to severe. I strongly recommend you seek clarification from the physician who originally ordered the scan. Best wishes to you and your child
