Childhood causes are: Abnormalities of fetal brain development from a genetic disorder, exposure to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, certain prescription medications & viruses; placental or maternal conditions that lower blood flow & oxygen to the fetal brain; post-natal infection or injury. Since you need to know if it could be a progressive disorder, ask your mom about all these + family history & see a neurologist.

At your age: Might consider that there was some relative hypoxia during gestation or at labor and delivery. Unlikely this is an early presentation of genetic alzheimer's, and unless there is significant alcohol abuse or malnutrition, thiamine deficiency would also be unlikely. Some families exhibit various spinocerebellar degenerations, and a partial genetic expression may explain the atrophy.
