Your doc is right: It's not a question of legitimate pain or not. It's a question of best way to deal with it. Most current medical guidelines indicate that narcotics are best for acute, short-term pain and for terminal diseases. Long term use for non-life-threatening conditions usually has more risk than benefit. There are many non-narcotic approaches to dealing with chronic pain. Ask your doctor about these.
