How does a doctor or a pharmacist identify an unknown pill?

Unknown pill: On prescription and over the counter medications there are markings and numbers that identify the pills. By looking up the color, shape, scoring on the pill and the numbers or markings we can identify the pill. Their are applications and books that we use to identify them.
