No joint movement: Iso is from the greek word meaning "same" and metric refers to length. So an isometric exercise is one in which there is a muscle contraction without a change in its length, ie the joint does not move. Flexing the biceps, for example, is an isometric exercise. Pinching & holding your shoulder blades together is a great example of a functional isometric exercise used to treat shoulder problems.
