Stool softener: At 5 wks post colon resection the anastomosis is healing tightly. Any firm stool in left colon passing thru the stitch line can cause pain especially with a low anterior resection. The diet should be kept soft without roughage and stool softener like Colace (docusate sodium) used so that the stitch line wont be irritated.
