A member asked:

Is it possible to have 100% return to normal activity after first rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome?

Rarely: A good result following surgery for TOS is good relief of pain, numbness and tingling in most or all areas. But rarely is this 100% relief of all symptoms. Patients with good relief usually find that they are symptom free at rest and with moderate activity. But with heavy duty activities, mild symptoms of pain, numbness, and tingling may occur. Patients then learn to limit their activities.

TOS: Resection of the first rib should not result in any limitation in normal activity. The primary limitation is the potential for residual TOS symptoms. If you are involved in activities that require overhead maneuvers, like rockclimbing or work that requires reaching, it is unlikely that a patient will be completely asymptomatic.
